Behind these famously scary faces of modern horror films is Tom Savini, a show business legend who designed and executed shocking special makeup effects and performed stunts in films that have terrified three generations of moviegoers.

Come hear Savini talk about the art of blood and guts when he visits Northeast State Community College on Oct. 20 for two presentations at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium and 7 p.m. at the Wellmont Regional Center for the Performing Arts.

The Pittsburgh-born Savini honed his knowledge of makeup with his army training as a combat photographer serving in Vietnam from 1969-70. He began his adventure into the movie business with the philosophy that, “The more you do the more you get to do.” His credits as artist, actor, and stuntman include Dawn of the Dead, Friday the 13th, Day of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Monkey Shines, Knightriders, Maniac, Two Evil Eyes, Killing Zoe, and From Dusk Til Dawn.

For the next six years he worked as a freelance photographer by day and an actor/makeup artist at night, doing repertory regional theater in North Carolina. It was during these years that Tom honed his makeup skills by designing production make-ups for three area theatres. A typical evening meant that Tom would play a lead character, apply his own make up, and before curtain time apply beards, scars, aging, and whatever, to nearly everyone in the cast.

Savini’s skills got him noticed. He was besieged by producers who let him create innovative and shocking effects, and sometimes perform stunts, play roles, and stage fights. He took his turn behind the camera directing three episodes of the Tales from the Darkside television series and the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead.

He still operates his own special make up effects company, Tom Savini, LTD. His Special MakeUp Effects School, part of the Douglas Education Center, has become an enormous success enrolling students from all over the country. Savini is also an author, having published Grande Illusions and Grande Illusions Book Two, describing the art and technique of special make up effects.

His appearance at Northeast State is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the College’s Cultural Activities Committee.
